How to stay calm in the warm-up arena

Crowds, nerves, other horses: a few ways to keep the warm-up from ruining your round.

The warm-up arena at a show can be more stressful than the course itself. Lots of horses, little space, everyone with their own plan. Here is what helps my riders:

  • Focus on yourself and your horse, not on everything happening around you.
  • Keep talking to your trainer. A shared warm-up plan gives you a sense of control.
  • Think positively. You have prepared for this.
  • Remember to breathe. A slow, deep breath calms both you and your horse.
